“Living Water”

Here is a trivia question for you! What did God create first, water or light? Well, we know he said “Let there be light, and there was light!” in the book of Genesis, but did he ever say “Let there be water?”

Let’s see, in Genesis 1:1-2 (Contemporary English Version) it says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was barren, with no form of life; it was under a roaring ocean covered with darkness. But the Spirit of God was moving over the water.”

If my calculations are correct, the moment God created earth, it already had oceans. Water was a ‘default’ to the very beginning of our world. If you continue reading in Genesis 1, you will find out that every command thereafter helped formed the earth, but water was already in existence…much like God already was.

It’s no wonder why God (in the human form of Jesus Christ) refers to himself as the “Living Water” in John 4:13-14 when he was chatting with the Samaritan woman at the well. “Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

This week in the #4thQTRchallenge, (which you can join here) our habit focus is drinking ONLY water all day, except for 1 drink of choice. The purpose behind this is not only to improve our health because our bodies NEED water (since it is made up mostly of water), it’s also to recognize how many times we fill up our cups with something we think will satisfy us, yet only to leave us over-caffeinated, increasing our sugar intake, or destroying our liver! Just like Jesus tells us that nothing else can truly satisfy our soul like him, nothing else can hydrate and heal us like water.

There are no coincidences when God’s hand is involved. We NEED water to survive and heal because we are made mostly of water. We NEED Jesus to survive and heal because he is the LIVING WATER. When God created the earth, water covered it before he ever spoke his first words of “Let there be light.” It’s no wonder our bodies and souls find healing when we are close to the ocean.
